Metallica is an American heavy metal band that formed in 1981 in Los Angeles California. Since their formation they have released nine studio albums, two live albums and forty-five singles. They have also released two EP’s and 24 music videos.
Metallica’s first album in 1983 was going to be called “Metal up Your Ass”, but the distributor refused to release an album with that name. It was subsequently renamed “Kill ‘Em All”. The album was not a financial success, but did earn the band a growing fan base.
“Master of Puppets”, Metallica’s third studio album came in 1986. It was the first to be certified gold, and by 2003 it had gone six times platinum.

The next few albums proved more successful. “And Justice for All” in 1988, and then “Metallica” in 1990 were huge successes. They propelled Metallica into super star status.
Their most recent album, “Death Magnetic” in 2008 was also a huge hit. Although it was released in controversy, it debuted at number one in several counties, and broke many records around the world.
It is estimated that Metallica has sold 100 million albums worldwide. They have won countless awards, including nine Grammy’s.
The Metallica story has not been short of controversy. During the European leg of their “Damage Inc” tour, Cliff Burton was tragically killed when the bands bus overturned. His death placed in doubt the future of the band, but the remaining members decided that Burton would want them to continue.
In 1992 James Hetfield suffered second and third degree burns to his arms and face whilst performing on tour. He walked into a 3.5 metre flame as a result of confusion of the pyrotechnics setup.
Probably the most controversial time in their career was in 2001 and 2002 during their legal battle with Napster. Metallica filed a lawsuit at U.S. District Court, after discovering that there music was freely available. A settlement was reached between the band and Napster, but that eventually fell over when Napster went into liquidation.
Through all the turmoil, Metallica continued to build their reputation as one of the greatest heavy metal bands of all time.
